George Floyd Tragedy

I don’t usually weigh in on these things because it will just get lost in the noise, but this recent homicide by a police officer warrants comment. I was not surprised to read today that the tragedy was preceded by a history of complaints against the officer involved. It’s not uncommon in spouse abuse cases that end tragically for there to have been a history of complaints and/or a hand full of people who have suspicions or are even aware of the abuse to stay quiet. And then, of course, everyone is surprised at the tragic ending. This officer was an abuser with a history. Most of you know that I was a former federal agent. I have had the opportunity to work with a lot of outstanding and very professional local and county police officers and even a few professional federal agents. A lot of people go into law enforcement as a calling to help others and their communities and to make a positive difference. Sadly, many only go into law enforcement because they think it’s cool to be a police officer or a federal agent (PB). The officer whose actions led to the death of Floyd fit into the second category. He was showing his power (the power of the badge he did not deserve) over Floyd by disregarding Floyd’s health-related complaints and his control over the gathering crowd by ignoring their pleas on Floyd’s behalf. So, though the officer directly involved and his partner should be immediately arrested and charged (no, I am not convicting them as they will have their day in court), the investigation should not stop there, nor should the terminations. Persons in the officer’s chain of command who would have or should have had knowledge of the officer’s history should be held accountable. Both the level of tragedy and the officer’s attitude at the scene are reflective of a systemic problem.

But, I would add, though protesting is acceptable, looting, rioting, burning cars and buildings are not. It is unacceptable and demonstrates a level of ignorance almost equal to that of the officer involved.

Fighting fire with fire actually can work, but fighting stupidity with more stupidity, well, … good luck with that.

Thanks for stopping by.
